Our group is interested in the molecular determinants of dyslipidemias (abnormal concentrations of circulating lipids) as major risk factors for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Family and population genetic studies have identified a significant number of genetic variants associated with circulating lipid concentrations. However, a large number of these variants are located in non-coding intergenic regions, making it difficult to interpret the identified variants and to identify the genes and biological mechanisms involved.
While the liver is the major organ regulating lipoprotein metabolism, the availability of (healthy) liver tissue is very limited, which considerably restricts investigations. Thus, in addition to in vivo approaches, our team works on an in-vitro study model of hepatic organoids derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells.
Our research group aims to integrate genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptomic data with functional characterization data to identify new genes and biological mechanisms involved in lipoprotein metabolism and cardiometabolic diseases. Our research projects are at the intersection of several disciplinary fields and combine medical, biological, genetic, and bioinformatics expertise.
The overall team, led by Pr. Cariou and Dr. Le May is composed of 40 members (clinicians, scientists, research assistants and PhD students).
